March

Happy National March Into Literacy Month! In America, a new initiative by the National Education Association (NEA) and Reading is Fundamental (RIF) will create a surge in reading awareness and the power of literacy through local and national campaigns. Though literacy is normally associated with reading, writing is undeniably just as important. Also, fun fact: Dr. Seuss’s birthday is March 2nd! As you turn your focus towards literacy this month, why not travel back in time (or not, if you’re a regular patron of the Children’s section of the library) to the stories of Dr. Seuss and try your hand at emulating the legendary author.

February

Apple Pun - Valentine's

Ahhhh, the month of February in America means Hallmark channels spinning out cheesy, heartfelt rom-coms and a spike in chocolate and flower sales – but worry not, Writing It Out will not succumb to such consumerism! Whether you are single, involved, or questioning, take some time to show your appreciation for something, that’s right – not someone, by utilizing anthropomorphism. Pen a sonnet for a non-human entity and let your love be known!

January

Collage of Famous Authors

As the old saying goes, “new year, new you!” While change is often met with hesitation, for this month we challenge you to write a piece in three different styles to celebrate branching out and trying new things. The styles can be incorporated in one cohesive piece or be submitted as three versions of one work. From Romanticism to Realism, let thine words shine true!

Wanderlust

Fernweh: longing for a place you’ve never been to. This German term does not have an English counterpart, but we think it’s fitting as we head into the holiday season. These upcoming months are filled with festivities from holidays around the world and though you might not celebrate these, for this month, we encourage you to connect to your roots and describe your home or any location in 10 words or less. Home can be a house you’ve lived in before, where your ancestors originated from, where the holidays you celebrate were conceived – it could even be your mind, a dwelling place we sometimes overlook. Wherever it may be, indulge in a bit of wanderlust and let your thoughts meander to new familiar places.

November

Have you ever traversed the volcanoes of the Serengeti? Lived through the cholera plague? Found yourself in an annoying supernatural love triangle?  In honor of NaNoWriMo, we challenge you this month to write some flash fiction. Pen a rich and compelling piece in 150 words or less that will draw readers out of the limits of their minds and into your fictional world. Happy creating!

October

Fall is officially here, and with that comes pumpkin spiced concoctions, leaves fluttering in the wind, and everything basic. For this month, we challenge you to write a piece brimming with clichés to reflect how a stunning season such as autumn is often the muse for idyllic Hallmark-worthy works of art and literature. So go back to the ol’ drawing board and wipe your slate clean; grab the tiger by its tail and bring home the bacon with a piece as good as gold that’ll knock our socks off!
